The average cost of building a home in Australia works out at $1393 per square metre, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (‘ABS’). Of course, this is just a total average, and cities are going to have a higher cost.

In Canberra, you’ll pay between $2,000 – $4,000 per square meter. Luxury home builders will also cost more and the prices above are non-inclusive of the cost of purchasing land, site preparation, and the relevant approvals. Fees for draftsmen and architects are likewise not included.

This depends on a wide variety of factors. However, it usually takes between 6 months and 12 months on average to build a house in Australia. But before this, you have a lot of work to do in terms of the design and planning, which can also take between 1 – 4 months.

A lot of this will depend on you, however, while the building process is mostly out of your control. Keep in mind that you should not really be looking for a quickly constructed house. A 4 month home build should be treated with scepticism unless it’s a simple single storey home on a flat slope. It’s your dream home, and it is only right that it will take some time to come to fruition.

Many items will affect the home design process. Adverse weather conditions can stall the process. The slope of the land can also have a major impact, as this will delay the build.

Double and triple storey homes are more complex in nature, and this is more than just the increased space. To be honest, the things that could impact the process are infinite, from easements to tree roots to council approval. But with some careful planning, most of these factors can be eliminated.

The general order of precedence for the home building construction process will be similar to the following:

1. Excavation and Foundations (Including Basement, Cellars, and Garage)
2. Framing (Wooden Skeleton, Roof Framing, Slats and Sheathes)
3. Exterior Design (Roofing Material, Balconies, Terraces, Wall Exterior)
4. Interior Utilities (Electrical Fixtures, Piping, Plumbing, Wiring, Insulation)
5. Interior Design (Plasterboard, Flooring, Trim)
6. Final Utilities (Any Unfinished Plumbing, Electric, Or Water Facilities)
7. Tidying (Cleaning And Any Odd Jobs)

Of course. You can use the drafts from a different building designer or architect and we will go about building it or modifying it as required.

Be aware that when you do this, the drafts from your home are not actually your copyright – the other designer can use these drafts as he/she sees fit. It is only your copyright if you drastically modify the plans. So we will have to either drastically alter the plans or (more commonly) just work with the architect, which we often do.
